エジプトのコプト教徒が織った布の断片です。生成りの亜麻地に、紫褐色に染めた羊毛で文様が綴織りされています。図柄は壺から立ち上がる樹を意匠化したもので、周りを点の連なりが縁取っています。この種の裂は衣服の胸や肩に縫い付けられた飾り布で、着ていた人はその衣服のまま葬られ、エジプトの乾いた砂が羊毛と亜麻を千数百年のあいだ保ちました。ドイツで買い付けたものです。金彩の額に納めてあります。

A fragment of cloth woven by the Copts of Egypt. Purple-brown wool is tapestry-woven into an undyed linen ground, in a design of a stylised tree rising from a vase, edged with a run of dots. Panels like this were sewn onto the chest and shoulders of a tunic; the wearer was buried in that tunic, and Egypt's dry sand kept the wool and the linen for something like fifteen hundred years. Acquired in Germany, and presented here in a gilt frame.
