上半分に黒褐色の釉を掛け、下半分は焼き締めた生地の肌をそのまま見せる、小ぶりの炻器ボトル。上部だけを釉薬に浸して掛ける「掛け分け」は、高価な釉薬を節約しつつ、床や棚に接する底部は釉がなくても実用上支障がないという、実用陶器ならではの合理的な工夫です。釉と素地の境目には、浸し掛けならではの釉だまりや滴りの跡が残り、光沢のある黒褐色は鉄分を多く含む釉薬によるものです。 口縁には鍔状に立ち上がった縁が巡り、栓を固定しやすいよう配慮された形と見られます。中世から続く炻器の名産地「ラ・ボルヌ」の系譜を思わせる、素朴な焼き上がりです。窯元の銘はなく、作り手は伝わっていません。フランス、19〜20世紀初頭。

A small stoneware bottle, its upper half dipped in a dark brown glaze and its lower half left as bare, high-fired stoneware. Glazing only the top portion was a practical economy typical of everyday stoneware -- it saved on costly glaze while leaving the base, which only ever touched a shelf or floor, unglazed without any real loss of function. Pooling and drip marks along the boundary between glaze and bare clay are traces of that dipping process, and the glossy, near-black brown comes from a glaze rich in iron. A raised, collar-like lip circles the mouth, likely shaped to help hold a stopper in place. Its unpretentious finish evokes the lineage of La Borne, a stoneware-making center with roots going back to the Middle Ages. Unmarked, with no maker recorded. France, 19th-early 20th century.
