十字架本体を失い、キリスト像（コルプス）の部分だけが残る小型のブロンズ像。祭壇や個人の祈祷用に作られたこの種の像は蝋型鋳造（ロストワックス）によって型取られるのが通例で、本品にも鋳造時の調整跡がわずかに残ります。木や真鍮でできていた十字架本体は朽ちたり失われたりしやすい一方、丈夫なブロンズ製の御体部分だけが今日まで伝存する例は少なくありません。 腰布の襞の彫り方や身体表現の様式から、盛期ルネサンス以降のイタリアないし南欧の工房作と推定されます。厚みのある鋳造と、彫り込まれた表情の作り込みに、確かな仕事の跡が見て取れます。イタリアまたは南欧、16世紀。

A small bronze figure, the cross itself long lost, leaving only the corpus (the figure of Christ). Devotional figures of this kind — made for an altar or for private prayer — were typically cast using the lost-wax (cire perdue) method, and this piece still bears faint traces of casting adjustments. Because the cross itself, usually made of wood or brass, was prone to decay or loss, it's not uncommon for only the sturdier bronze corpus to survive to the present day. The carving of the loincloth folds and the stylization of the body suggest a workshop in Italy or Southern Europe, sometime after the High Renaissance. The substantial casting and the carefully worked expression show clear evidence of skilled craftsmanship. Italy or Southern Europe, 16th century.
